What is an Innovation in Digital Archiving Workshop?
‘Innovation Labs’ have been a standard part of the toolkit for the product development lifecycle of large companies for many years. These labs are a short cut to new product ideas, the creative use of technologies, and Intellectual Property such as patents to protect products from competitors. As such these labs are a necessary process for any entrepreneurial company to stay fresh and ahead of their competitors.
The Innovation in Digital Archiving Workshop will consist of an intensive one to three day workshop, run by an experienced facilitator that takes a small well selected team of experts on a journey of discovery in search of innovation fusing creativity and technology. The team will mix different disciplines and types of people such as creative talent and technology expertise.
The starting point for a workshop is an ‘opportunity statement’ expressing an intent. The local digital media company and the heritage project act as ‘business owners’ who take responsibility for the workshop with guidance from the expert facilitator. Prior to the workshop the business owner recruits a team of experts and thoroughly researches all available background on the proposed area.
During the workshop the facilitator of the workshop will use a variety of processes moving back and forth from a wide vast view to detailed drilling down. The workshop initially flies over the whole landscape and makes a crude map of the main features. Then the ‘business owner’ selects areas of promise for in depth prospecting. The final output of the workshop is a write-up of the essential material for creating new patents, new business ideas, and other forms of intellectual property.
Both the pre-workshop preparation and the after-workshop exploitation of the results are essential requirements for maximising the success and future impact of these workshops. Therefore the scheme will provide mentoring for both the preparatory steps and for the post-workshop exploitation.
