MILLS APPOINTED TO CORNWALL FILM

Cornwall Film, the development agency for Cornwall’s media sector, has appointed Jeremy Mills, Managing Director of Lion Television, as its new Chair.

Mills who grew up in Cornwall, has a wealth of experience working in broadcasting. Lion, which he set up in 1997, is one of the UK’s most successful production companies with offices in London, Glasgow, New York and Los Angeles. At Lion he has overseen a raft of award winning programmes including Hotel, Children’s Hospital and Castaway 2000.

He began his career at the BBC in Plymouth and was responsible for a range of hit programmes shown on BBC1 including The Vet, The Doctor and The Skipper, before becoming an executive producer on a range of BBC1 shows including Children’s Hospital, X cars and Airport.

Mills has been appointed to drive the Cornwall Film project forward, specifically to explore ways of building the capacity and infrastructure of the media sector in order to grow a sustainable media industry in Cornwall. One of his aims will be to develop the broadcast potential in Cornwall.

The media industry in Cornwall is thriving. Currently the high profile series Doc Marten is filming in Port Isaac and Nighty Night in North Cornwall. International productions like FFP’s four Rosamunde Pilcher adaptations are shooting this year and local companies like Oscha, Sprout, Spider Eye and Triple Echo are flourishing. Denham Productions have recently opened a Cornwall arm to grow their activities in the region and new talent like Awen and O-Region are pushing through the ranks.

If you are an experienced filmmaker and are interested in networking with like-minded people then you can join Cornwall Media Focus, a membership organisation for local film, TV and new media practitioners in Cornwall (www.cornwallmediafocus.co.uk).

Pippa Best, project director at Cornwall Film said, “Jeremy’s appointment is a fantastic endorsement of the aims and ambitions of Cornwall Film. It highlights our commitment to forging links between the local sector and the national and international marketplace. His experience and insight will be invaluable as we develop this project and support the region’s growing media industry – it’s a really exciting time to be in Cornwall.”
