As broadcasters look for ‘safe hands’ for new commissions, what can a small company realistically expect from an umbrella deal with a more experienced partner? Can you really make any money or retain creative input? What sort of back end deal should you be asking for? As an alternative, how can smaller companies partner effectively and equitably in order to present a more reassuring package to potential financiers? Colin Millar worked with independent producers during the UK film industry’s mid 90s renaissance and for the major US studios before moving to Thames Television where he worked across the drama, sitcom, and entertainment output of the UK’s largest independent production company. In 2000, Colin became Head of Legal and Business Affairs at Lion Television where his responsibilities included structuring and negotiating production finance and distribution agreements with UK broadcasters, US network and cable broadcasters, and international distributors and licensees. After briefly directing business affairs for the Discovery Channel’s operation outside North, South, and Central America, Colin established his own company, Cerummedia, to take advantage of the deregulation of the UK television business. He now works for a range of clients from creative individuals, through start-up independents, to the UK’s largest production companies.
