Film and TV productions have spent over £4.5million in 2006.
Productions such as Mel Gibson's Apocalypto, Doc Martin, Jam and Jerusalem, Treasure Island and numerous documentaries and commercials have taken full advantage of Cornwall's unique locations in 2006, leading to the creation of well over 100 local jobs.
Pippa Best says "Incoming films use Cornwall's specialist crew, cast, and facilities, and our hotels, restaurants and shops all reap the benefits. Increasingly, tourists are also visiting Cornwall as a direct result of seeing the region on film, generating even more revenue."
David Shepheard, Head of Inward Investment and Locations at South West Screen says "Inward investment through location filming makes a vital contribution to the economy of the region and Cornwall Film and South West Screen do everything we can to encourage productions to choose Cornwall as their base. We offer an online locations library showcasing many of Cornwall's best locations, and an online Production Guide, which contains details of the crew and facilities available locally. We also offer general support and advice to productions like Apocalypto when they are considering bringing their production to the region. Now that new tax breaks for filming in the UK have been announced, Cornwall Film and South West Screen are doing everything we can to generate even more investment."
The increase in film production locally reflects a UK wide increase in production. The UK Film Council highlighted this week that production spend in 2006 on films such as The Golden Age, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass jumped by 48%, making it the second best year ever for film production in the UK.
